RABJJ Black Belt Ceremony 2009!
A note from Prof. Ricardo Almeida:
Today we awarded two more
Black Belts at the RABJJ academy.
Multiple
students were also recognized by their progress and took another step
toward their elusive yet rewarding goal of becoming a Jiu Jitsu Black
Belt.
The concept of Black Belt has been highly commercialized
world wide and each individual school has their own standards. But as a
whole I feel that in Jiu Jitsu the level only keeps getting higher.
I
have awarded Black Belts to UFC fighters, BJJ world Champions
and world class instructors. I am equally proud of each one of
them
individually for their achievements, being it a gold medal at the
Mundials or some of my Black Belt students who have decided to run
their own schools.
Today however I was proud of them as a team.
We had students, from Delaware, South Jersey, Jersey Shore, New
Brunswick, Saratoga Springs and our own Hamilton. Our family of RABJJ
Black Belts has been able to extended the influence of our art and now
we are able to positively affect thousands of people between our many
individual locations. Their love and commitment to BJJ is inspiring.
Also present was Master Renzo Gracie who without his knowledge and
guidance I am sure none of this would be remotely possible.
Finally,
congratulations to today’s graduates, from Blue to Black Belt and big
thank you to all the students who came to the academy to prestige them.
See you in class,
Ricardo Almeida |

Professor Tom takes
3rd place in the No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championships at Black
Belt!
Professor
Tom just got back from taking home the Bronze medal in the Black Belt
level at the No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World
Championships. Professor Tom was world champion at the Brown
Belt
level in 2007. He lost a great match to former UFC champion
Josh
Barnett in the semi-finals by points (Barnett later went on to win the
division). In Professor's first match he beat a former brown belt world
champion 7-0. Professor Tom, once again, proved he is among the best in
the world in his weight class.
Congratulations for placing at
the Black Belt Level in the World Championships, we are sure you will
become a Black Belt World Champion in the future.
Also,
congratulations to Coach Haz for taking third in the Brown Belt
division and Eddie Fyvie for taking third in the Brown Belt division. |

RABJJ Association
First Annual Gala.
You're cordially invited to
attend our First Annual Gala.
Let's celebrate the great
times we had in 2009 and wish for an even better 2010 together.
RABJJ
has started another wonderful annual tradition in which you'll have a
chance to not only interact with all of our associated school head
instructors but also their students. Prof. Almeida will be
surprising a few students for their outstanding performances
throughout the year with beautiful awards, and you could be one of them.
Professor
Almeida invites each and every one of you to celebrate with his family
and friends a very special night for all of RABJJ Academy's
students. Please feel free to bring along your own friends and family,
as we'd love to meet all of them.
Many special guests have confirmed their attendance, and just to name a
few:
Thomas Clifford
Gene
Dunn
Matt
Serra
Rolles
Gracie
Igor
Gracie
Gregor
Gracie
Luca
Atalla
We are also honored to announce that legendary Master Renzo
Gracie will be present with his family as well.
It
doesn't stop there: our very special attraction of the night will be
one of the best bands in New Jersey, and we're so happy to announce
that BIGGER THOMAS will be entertaining us for the night. Many of you
know that Professor John Dibianco is BT's drummer, so they'll be
performing their greatest hits and promise to get everyone off their
seats!
This
is a wonderful time of year to get your tuxedos and have your ladies
get their gowns out of the closet. It's going to be wonderful. You
definitely can't stay away from this one! Make sure you look for
someone
in the office as soon as possible, as we have a very limited amount of
seats available. You can ask for the details when you come get your
invitations.
We can't wait to see all of you there. We picked out a spectacular
venue for the event!

Jiu-Jitsu &
OCBJJ impacting personal lifestyles!
Please
take the time to read a letter written by one of our dedicated students
of 46 years old. It is a beautiful testament to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and
highlights some of the many benefits of training at OCBJJ.
Professor Tom,
It
is no secret why students my age are spending more and more time on the
mats training. Jiu Jitsu presents an endless amount of
applications
and challenges which make it most appealing to the older athlete.
State
Champion in High School, All American in College; I have to accept the
fact that my body has limitations at almost 47 years young. No
matter
how well I eat, sleep, and train, at this point it is inevitable that I
have met the point of diminishing returns when it comes to speed and
agility. However, I believe Jiu Jitsu requires a lot of thinking and
technique, similar to a chess match, and may be one of the only sports
that allows an athlete past his physical prime to still improve his
skill with age.
One
of the greatest days in my life was when I walked through the door at
Ocean County Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Forked River, New Jersey. I decided
to enroll
at the academy after I shattered an ankle racing
motocross. The
surgeon that put my leg back together was firm in the premise that I
would never be the same. Fortunately for me, Professor Tom
DeBlass
convinced me that I could still reach a high level of skill regardless
of my age and injury by training at his academy.
I
never imagined just how much Jiu Jitsu would change my life!
Initially,
I struggled, as do most beginners. I used too much strength, fatigued
almost immediately, and felt trapped and panicky when
mounted. But
within the year, I was able to slow my game down, focus on skill and
enjoy the benefits of this great art.
I
have found that being older may be an advantage in Jiu Jitsu.
I don't
have many social or financial distractions since I have already
graduated college, I'm married with children, and have owned a
successful business for over 24 years. I have sculpted good nutrition,
hydration, strength, cardio, flexibility, rest and recovery into my
daily life. I have years of athletic and practical experiences that can
be applied to everyday training.
Jiu
Jitsu has given me a greater understanding of core beliefs, pain and
suffering. It has chiseled my integrity into being a better
father,
friend, and teammate. It has taught me that every time I put my mind
and
body to the test it defines my capacity to live.
A
few weeks ago, I tore my biceps out of my elbow training for a non-Jiu
Jitsu related event, and needed immediate surgery. I would
miss the
Pan Ams and what might have been a few months training. I returned to
the mats with a brace two weeks after surgery. My family and
teammates
asked me why I came back to train so soon. My answer has
been... I will
only have an opportunity to train with one arm for a short period until
I recover fully.
Happiness
is finding our innermost strengths by testing our skills in every
situation. This is a lesson I would never have learned without my
Professor, instructors, fellow teammates, and everyone I train with at
the academy.

Belt

Professor Tom at
the Abu Dhabi World Championships
As
most of us know, Abu Dhabi is the Olympics of submission
grappling. There are 5 weight classes consisting of the top
16
competitors in the world in each weight division. Prof. Tom
secured his spot in June after winning the North American Trials.
Professor
Tom's first match was against Roberto "Cyborg" Abreu, an 11 time world
medalist, world champion, Pan American Champion, and Brazilian National
wrestling Champion. Cyborg was one of the favorites to win
the
division. The match ended up being a very controversial match
as
the referees made a mistake penalizing Cyborg negative 2 points
throughout the match, then realizing at the end of the match they
thought "Cyborg" was Professor Tom. Professor Tom was in
control
the whole match staying on top and almost securing a tight guillotine
choke. Cyborg went on to take second in the division.
Unfortunately these mistakes happen. Congratulations to both
competitors as Professor Tom proved he is right there amongst the best
in the world at his weight, and for Cyborg for putting on such an
amazing performance.
We look forward to the 2011 Abu Dhabi world championships as Professor
Tom is already training hard to take the Gold Medal. |

Summer happenings
at OCBJJ:
September
is here and it is time to get back on the mats for some hard
training! Although the hard training never stops at OCBJJ we
know
many of you take the summer to spend time with your family and enjoy
vacations. Now it is time to focus hard on achieving our
goals!
Let's take a minute to review some highlights of the summer events that
happened at OCBJJ:
*Congratulations to Coach Matt Mako on receiving his Purple belt!
*17
year old phenom Garry Tonon won the Advanced MENS division in the
Goodfight Tournament beating a Black Belt along the way, he also later
took second place in both the men's Advanced and Men's Purple
Belt
division in NAGA.
*Coach Kyle Cramner wins the
intermediate ABSOLUTE division in Grapplers Quest then wins the
Advanced Mens Division two weeks later in the Goodfight Tournament.
*White Belt Carlos Solis winning his white belt division in Grapplers
Quest and his beginner No-Gi Division in NAGA.
*Professor Tom's instructor Professor Ricardo Almeida winning his UFC
fight against Kendal Grove in DOMINATING fashion.
*Our
very own Professor Tom DeBlass winning the North American Abu Dhabi

Tom for the most prestigious grappling event in the world where the top
16 grapplers in the world from each weight class battle for the world
title to take place in Barcelona, Spain, September 26 and 27th.
Now
enjoy some pictures of our student's and Professor's hard work during
the summer months! We are all looking forward to seeing all of
